In the four central government hospitals located in Delhi, an average of 70 children died every month in six and a half years. The worst situation is of Safdarjung Hospital where about 50 newborns lost their lives every month during 81 months.
Apart from Safdarjung Hospital, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Kalavati Saran Hospital and Sucheta Kriplani Hospital have given this information in response to separate applications filed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act by news agency PTI. .
In the RTI application, information was sought about the number of newborns who lost their lives in these hospitals between January 2015 and July 2021. Along with this, it was also asked what were the reasons for the death of these children.
The Safdarjung and Sucheta Kriplani hospitals have provided data up to September 2021. According to the reply received under RTI, during this period more than 3.46 lakh children were born in these hospitals, out of which 5724 children died.
5724 children died in 4 hospitals of Delhi in 6 years
Out of the total deaths, more than four thousand children have lost their lives only in Safdarjung Hospital. Although the number of children born in Safdarjung Hospital is the highest. Except Kalavati Saran Hospital, other hospitals have not given the cause of death of the children. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital did not give the death toll of the children.
Calculating these figures, the infant mortality rate per thousand children comes to 16.5. According to the Bulletin of the Sample Registration Survey (SRS) released in October 2021, the infant mortality rate per thousand children in Delhi in 2019 was 11.
According to the reply provided by AIIMS, 173 children died in this hospital between January 2015 and July 2021, which is the lowest among the four hospitals. In this hospital, 15,354 children were born during this period. More than 1.68 lakh babies were born at Safdarjung Hospital from January 2015 to September 2021, out of which 4,085 died.
Children died due to these reasons
Similarly, 1,199 children died in Kalavati Hospital from January 2015 to July 2021, while 80,959 children were born in the hospital during this period. According to the reply to the RTI application, 81,611 babies were born in Sucheta Kriplani Hospital, out of which 267 died after birth. Only Kalavati Saran Hospital in its reply has given the main reasons for the death of the children.
According to the hospital, suffocation due to premature birth, septicemia, difficulty in breathing and complications arising due to low birth weight are the main causes of death of children. According to the bulletin of SRS, the average infant mortality rate of the country in 2019 was 30 per thousand children while in the national capital it was 11. According to the bulletin, the highest infant mortality rate is in Madhya Pradesh (46 per thousand children) and the lowest in Mizoram and Nagaland (three per thousand children). The infant mortality rate is six in Kerala, eight in Goa, 41 in Uttar Pradesh, 40 in Chhattisgarh and Assam and 17 in Maharashtra.
Talking about the year-wise details, according to the reply received from Safdarjung Hospital, 26,521 children were born in the hospital in 2015, out of which 684 died. Similarly, in 2016, 27,717 children were born and 944 children lost their lives. In 2017, 20,89 children were born and 390 died. In 2018, 28,338 children were born out of which 794 died. In 2019, 28,310 children were born and 623 died. In 2020, 17,658 children were born but 410 lost their lives and by September 2021, 11,660 children were born in Safdarjung, out of which 240 died.
In 2015, 13,471 babies were born at Sucheta Kripalani Hospital, affiliated to Lady Hardinge Medical College, of which 28 died. In 2016, 13,220 children were born and 26 died. In 2017, 13,417 babies were born but 44 newborns lost their lives. In 2018, 13,857 children were born and 48 died. In 2019, 12,677 children were born out of which 69 died. In 2020, 8,781 children were born in the hospital and 27 children died. As of September 2021, 6,188 babies were born in the hospital, of which 25 died.
According to the reply provided by AIIMS, between January 2015 and July 2021, 15,354 children were born in the hospital. It did not give the number of year-wise numbers, but in which year the number of children died. The hospital reported that 12 children died between April 1, 2015 and March 31, 2016. Similarly, between April 1, 2016 and March 31, 2017, 23 children died. died.
From April 2017 to March 2018, 31 children died and from April 2018 to March 2019, 08 children died after birth in the hospital. At the same time, 39 children died between April 2019 and 31 March 2020 and 49 children between April 2020 and March 2021 and 11 children between April 2021 and 31 July 2021. Kalavati Saran Hospital has not provided year wise details.
