After winning a thumping majority in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will be eyeing a majority in the biennial elections to the 36 seats of the State Legislative Council to be held on April 9 from the Local Bodies Authority Constituency. Election office sources said on Monday that 36 seats of the Upper House, spread over 35 local authority constituencies, will go to polls simultaneously on April 9 and counting on April 12. For the BJP, which came to power again with a two-thirds majority in the recently concluded assembly elections, this election will be an opportunity to make itself the single largest party in the house and thus get the party a majority in both the houses of the UP legislature. Can get it.
Despite the BJP having a clear majority in the Seventeenth Assembly, the Samajwadi Party’s (SP) strength in the Legislative Council made it difficult for the BJP to pass bills. The term of the members who won from the local authority constituency ended on March 7. The 100-member Legislative Council of Uttar Pradesh currently has 35 members from the BJP, 17 from the SP and four from the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). Congress, Apna Dal (Sonelal) and Nishad Party have one member each in the UP Legislative Council. At present 37 seats are vacant.
Electoral process will start from March 15
Leader of the Opposition in the Council Ahmed Hassan passed away after prolonged illness. Before the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, many members of the Legislative Council of SP had joined the BJP. These included Narendra Singh Bhati, Shatrudra Prakash, Rama Niranjan, Ravi Shankar Singh Pappu, CP Chandra, Ghanshyam Lodhi, Shailendra Pratap Singh and Ramesh Mishra. BSP MLC Suresh Kashyap also joined BJP. The election process will start from March 15. Technically, the elections are still being held in two phases as originally announced, but now voting will take place on a single day. The Election Commission had said in a statement on February 6 that the program was changed following the demands of political parties.
Voting will be held on April 9
The commission had announced on January 28 that the biennial Legislative Council elections would be held in two phases on March 3 and 7. The counting of votes was to be held on March 12, but now in both the phases, voting will be held on April 9 and counting of votes will be done on April 12. The term of the members ended on March 7. It may be mentioned that there are two seats in the Mathura-Eta-Mainpuri Local Authority constituency, for which separate elections will be held. In the recently concluded assembly elections, BJP has won 255 seats, while its allies Apna Dal (Sonelal) and Nishad Party won 12 and 6 seats respectively. Samajwadi Party has won 111 seats, while its ally Rashtriya Lok Dal has won 8 seats and another ally Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party has won six seats. The Congress has won two seats, while the BSP has won one.
Names of candidates sought
On the Legislative Council elections, Uttar Pradesh BJP General Secretary JPS Rathore said on Monday, “A meeting was held in the party office in this regard and three to five names of possible candidates have been sought from each seat.” He said that in this election, the village head, the members of the area panchayat and the block head, the members and presidents of the district panchayat, councilors and presidents of the city panchayats, municipal councils and municipal corporations will be voters and besides these, the MLAs and MPs can also exercise their votes.
