The Election Commission said on Saturday that by-elections for one Lok Sabha seat and four assembly seats in four states (Bupolls 2022) will be held on April 12. With the presidential election due this year, by-elections will also fill vacancies in the electoral college, which elects the president.
According to a statement by the Election Commission, the counting of votes will take place on April 16. The Asansol parliamentary seat in West Bengal fell vacant following the resignation of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Babul Supriyo, who had joined the Trinamool Congress.
Bypolls will also be held in Ballygunge in West Bengal, Khairagarh in Chhattisgarh, Bochahan in Bihar and Kolhapur North in Maharashtra. Notification for the five by-elections will be issued on March 17.
The Election Commission has announced the bypolls at a time when the results of assembly elections in five states have been declared. In Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh, where the BJP has won a bumper victory in these elections, the Aam Aadmi Party has also got a big victory in Punjab. In Goa, the BJP is just one seat behind the majority, while in Manipur the BJP has crossed the majority mark.
