In Punjab till a few days ago, Charanjit Singh Channi was only a minister in the Amarinder Singh government. When the party decided to make Channi the chief minister of Punjab, he was not even on the list of natural contenders in the race. But he took the chief minister’s post with enthusiasm and he held this chair for 111 days before the election was announced.
During this, Channi remained in the discussion due to the announcement of concessions, full page advertisements and involvement in hockey games. Punjab Congress President Navjot Singh Sidhu, who played a key role in ousting Amarinder Singh from power, sought to declare himself as the chief ministerial face of the party with the assembly elections approaching, but the Congress chose Channi.

His reputation as the first Dalit chief minister of Punjab seemed to help, as more than 30 percent of the state’s population is Dalit. Congress has fielded Channi from two seats- Chamkaur Sahib in Rupnagar and Bhadaur in Barnala. This made it clear how much Congress was relying on him.
But he lost from both the places. The Congress had to face defeat from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). After being the chief minister for nearly four months, Channi is now moving towards exile even in relative terms. Born in the year 1963 in Bhajauli village of Kharar, Channi entered politics in the year 1992 when he was elected as a councillor.

He became the President of Kharar Municipal Council in the year 2003. He made a place in the state assembly in the year 2007 as an independent MLA from Chamkaur Sahib. In the year 2012, he won from this seat on a Congress ticket and became the Leader of the Opposition in the House.
After being elected MLA for the third time in the year 2017, he got a place in Amarinder Singh’s ministry. He handled the departments of Technical Education, Industrial Training, Employment Generation and Tourism and Culture Affairs. Channi and three other ministers revolted against Amarinder Singh in the state last year. Channi then decided to accompany the state unit president Navjot Singh Sidhu.
LLB from Panjab University
Channi has a BA degree. He has also done LLB from Panjab University and MBA from Punjab Technical University. He is now going to do his PhD from Panjab University, Chandigarh. As a minister, Channi came into controversy in the year 2018 when a woman IAS officer accused her of sending objectionable messages. However, Channi apologized to the officer saying that he had sent the message inadvertently.

Even during the election campaign, he was surrounded by controversies. The Enforcement Directorate raided his nephew’s house.
