Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and more than half of his ministers lost in the Punjab Assembly elections on Thursday. On the other hand, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has got a thumping majority. AAP won 92 of the 117 assembly seats, while the ruling Congress suffered a crushing defeat.
Channi had contested from Chamkor Sahib in Rupnagar district and Bahadur seat in Barnala, but lost both the seats to AAP candidates. Channi was the sitting MLA from Chamkaur Sahib. He was appointed chief minister in September last year after Amarinder Singh stepped down from the post.
Many Congress ministers lost in Punjab
In the state, OP Soni defeated AAP’s Ajay Gupta in Amritsar Central seat, Raj Kumar Varka defeated AAP’s Jasbir Singh Sandhu in Amritsar West seat. Manpreet Singh Badal got a crushing defeat from Jagroop Gill of AAP in Bathinda Urban seat. In Sangrur, Vijay Inder Singla lost to AAP’s Narinder Kaur Bharaj, while in Ludhiana West seat Bharat Bhushan Ashu lost to AAP candidate Gurpreet Bassi Gogi.
Seven ministers of Congress got victory
Randeep Singh Nabha lost in Amloh seat and Gurkeerat Singh Kotli in Khanna seat, while Razia Sultana was defeated by Mohammad Jamir-ul-Rehman of AAP in Malerkotla seat. Sangat Singh Giljian was defeated by Jasveer Singh Raja Gill of AAP in Urmar seat.
However, seven Congress ministers were successful in securing victory. These include Rana Gurjit Singh, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa, Aruna Chaudhary, Pargat Singh, Sukhwinder Singh Sarkaria and Amarinder Singh Raja Waring.
