A day after the leaders of the ‘G23’ group demanded a “collective and inclusive leadership” in the party, its member Hooda on Thursday met former party president Rahul Gandhi. Sources say that during his meeting with Rahul Gandhi, which lasted for more than an hour, discussions were held regarding the results of the recent assembly elections and strengthening the party. Rahul Gandhi had called Hooda to discuss the political situation in Haryana.
A day before this, the leaders of ‘G23’ had a meeting over dinner. Hooda is also a member of the ‘G23’ group which has been demanding organizational change and collective leadership in the party. Hooda’s meeting with Rahul Gandhi is also being seen as an attempt by the Gandhi family to reach out to the leaders of the group and hear their side.
News agency PTI quoted sources as saying that Sonia Gandhi contacted Azad on Wednesday and he is likely to meet Sonia Gandhi on Friday. Sources also said that Hooda has told Rahul Gandhi that the leaders of this group do not want any post, but are advising them to strengthen the party. It has also come to the fore that Hooda told Rahul Gandhi that any action against Kapil Sibal would not be acceptable to ‘G23’ as Sibal had only talked about strengthening the Congress.
Sibal had said in an interview recently that the Gandhi family should give up the leadership of the Congress and give a chance to another leader. After this, some leaders considered close to the Gandhi family had demanded action against Sibal. Chhattisgarh Health Minister T.S. Singhdev has been added. Singhdev has tweeted that he should be expelled from the party for making public his personal and unpleasant opinion against the decision of the Congress Working Committee (CWC).
After meeting Rahul Gandhi, Hooda met senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad at his residence. Senior Congress leader Anand Sharma also reached Azad’s residence and attended the meeting. Later Sibal also reached Azad’s residence. Azad, Sibal and Sharma are also part of the ‘G23’ group. It is believed that these leaders have discussed the strategy ahead in the background of the meeting held on Wednesday. The leaders of the ‘G23’ group of Congress met at a dinner on Wednesday to discuss the results of the recent assembly elections and said that the only way forward for the party is to have a system of collective and inclusive leadership.
