Former cricketer and politician Navjot Singh Sidhu has resigned from the post of Congress State President. After the crushing defeat of the Congress in the Punjab elections, he sent his resignation to party president Sonia Gandhi. In the Punjab elections, the Aam Aadmi Party has won 92 seats, achieving a historic victory. While Congress has to be satisfied with 18 seats, Shiromani Akali Dal 3, BJP 2 and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) 1 seat. An independent candidate has also won the election. Navjot Singh Sidhu also lost the election from Amritsar East seat. Born on October 20, 1963, Sidhu had frequent feuds with former Chief Minister Amarinder Singh and then Charanjit Singh Channi.
According to reports, earlier when the CWC meeting was held on Sunday, when Punjab in-charge Harish Chaudhary blamed Sidhu for Punjab’s defeat. He had said that what Sidhu spoke about Channi in front of the people caused a lot of damage to the party. Navjot Singh Sidhu was dreaming of reaching the peak in Punjab politics, he became a hit wicket there.
On Tuesday, Chowdhary had reached Chandigarh and there he reviewed the reasons for the defeat with the party candidates in the elections. He met about 63 leaders separately and found that the Congress was defeated in Punjab due to internal strife. Before this review meeting, Chaudhary had met both Channi and Sidhu. The reasons given by the party candidates include ED’s raid on Channi’s nephew, Sidhu’s continuous attack on Channi and ex-state president Sunil Jakhar’s bigotry.
Many leaders also believe that behind Sidhu’s first defeat in the elections and now his resignation, he has to sideline many senior party leaders. He had opened a front against many party leaders only.
When Sidhu was made the Chief of Punjab Congress, at that time his rebellion was going on against the then CM Captain Amarinder Singh. Many other leaders were also with Sidhu in this episode. But later these leaders did not support Sidhu as the new CM face.
After this, when the party bet on the Dalit face Charanjit Singh Channi, Sidhu started speaking against Channi. After Channi took over, he protested against the appointment of Advocate General and DGP and resigned. However, after the removal of the AG and DGP, he withdrew his resignation.
Even later, Sidhu continued to publicly attack Channi and raised questions about his plans. But when the results came, Sidhu not only himself got bowled on the Punjab pitch but the party was also all out.
