- The Atolls Of Malé
Thanks to a range of places that remain reasonably steady, especially during the peak summer months when south swells are plentiful, the Malé Atolls have long been a favorite among surfers. Between April and October, this takes place.
Even though March and November are considered transitional months, there are moments when things are pleasantly surprising.
At this time of year, winds from the west or southwest may be typical, but many of the surf breaks in this island chain’s reef system are well protected and will remain clean, while others are offshore.
- Atolls In The Central
It is easy to assume that the circumstances in the Central Atolls are somewhere between those of the Male Atolls and the South Atolls.
The surf season can therefore be extended from March to November. Summer remains the peak season in the northern hemisphere (from June till September).
At this time, the shore gets hit by a larger surge and persistent offshore breezes.
Since there are less people surfing these breaks, it will be challenging to locate a partner.
You’ll probably find a friendlier, more accommodating wave just around the bend or on the next reef pass if you encounter a reef-sucking barrel that appears to be fairly daunting.
The Central Atolls have produced a large number of world-class breaks, particularly right-handers.
There are places that are shielded from all winds but the infrequent straight easterly breeze.
- Atolls In The South
South Atolls enjoy a longer season from February until November, whilst the majority of atolls in the Maldives have their peak season from April to September.
According to some, the greatest weather can be found from February to April, right before the southwest monsoon starts, and from September to November, right before it finishes.
The south-facing areas of the atoll may experience wind problems from May to August, but during those months you should motor to the east-facing area of the atoll for greater protection.
Given that this is the peak swell period, the east-facing breaks will still have plenty of size.
