The Karnataka High Court order dismissing various petitions challenging the ban on hijab in educational institutions has been challenged in the Supreme Court. The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday ruled on the hijab controversy, holding that wearing hijab is not a part of the essential religious practice in Islam and rejected the submissions of Muslim girl students for allowing them to wear the hijab in classrooms. The court also upheld the ban imposed on hijab in educational institutions in the state.
A three-judge bench of the High Court observed that the school dress rule is a reasonable restriction and is constitutionally permissible, on which the girl students cannot raise any objection. The Karnataka government requested everyone to follow the order saying that education is necessary. On the other hand, Muslim students’ union ‘Campus Front of India’ demonstrated against the ‘anti-constitutional order’ and called for all efforts to protect constitutional and private rights.

The government also said that it would try to win over the “misguided” Muslim girls. On January 1, six girl students of a college in Udupi had attended a press conference organized by the Campus Front of India and expressed their anger against the college administration for being barred from entering the classroom wearing hijab.
The High Court bench also said that the government has the right to issue the government order dated February 5, 2022 and no case is made out to hold it invalid. In this order, the state government has banned the wearing of those clothes, which disrupts equality, integrity and public order in schools and colleges. Muslim girls challenged this order in the High Court.
