India and China on Friday held the 15th round of high-level military talks to resolve the 22-month-long standoff in eastern Ladakh. On March 11 i.e. on Friday, the military commanders of both the countries had gathered in Chushul in eastern Ladakh for military talks. According to India’s defense establishment sources, the statements of both the countries (India and China) that have come out recently to resolve the dispute are ‘positive and encouraging’.
According to the information received, the Corps-Commander level talks started at 10 am at Chushul-Moldo ‘Border Point’ in the Indian side of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh. It is learned that the Indian side insisted on early withdrawal of troops to the remaining areas of conflict, including the resolution of the issues at Depsang Bulge and Demchok.
No progress was made in the last 14 rounds of talks
Earlier talks had not made any significant progress in resolving the impasse. During the talks, the focus was on taking forward the process of withdrawing troops in the Hot Springs (Patrolling Point-15) areas. The Indian delegation in the talks was led by Lt Gen Anindya Sengupta, the newly appointed Commander of the 14th Corps based in Leh.
The 14th round of talks between India and China was held on 12 January and no significant progress was made in resolving the standoff in the remaining places of confrontation. The Chinese delegation in the talks was to be led by Major General Yang Lin, commander of the South Xinjiang Military District.
Let us tell you that for the last 22 months, there is a dispute between India and China over the Line of Actual Control (LAAC) adjacent to Eastern Ladakh. There have been 14 rounds of meetings between the two countries to resolve the dispute.
Controversy is still going on in some areas
Through these meetings, disputed areas like Galvan Valley, North (Finger Area) of Pangong and South i.e. Kailash Hill Range, Gogra and Hot Spring have been resolved. But there are still areas like Depsang Plain and Demchok, where the dispute continues. Similar disputed areas will be discussed in the 15th round of meeting.
Significantly, when the whole world has turned against Russia due to the Ukraine war, then both India and China are seen standing with Russia. China is openly standing on the side of Russia. In such a situation, all eyes will be on the meeting of military commanders of India and China.
