Number of MLAs above 55 years of age increased in UP, Uttarakhand and Manipur

In Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Manipur assemblies, the number of MLAs above 55 years of age has increased this time. The number of MLAs above 55 years of age has increased in the state assemblies of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Manipur after the recently concluded assembly elections. According to an analysis by PRS Legislative Research, the proportion of MLAs who are 55 years of age or below declined to 59.5 per cent in 2022 from 64.7 per cent in 2017. On the other hand, the three newly elected assemblies currently have more women legislators than the outgoing house. In Uttar Pradesh, there are 47 women MLAs in the current assembly as compared to 42 women legislators in the outgoing assembly.

Increase in the number of women legislators

The number of women MLAs in Uttarakhand has increased from five in 2017 to eight in 2022. The number of women MLAs in the Manipur Legislative Assembly has also doubled to four from five years ago. In the 70-member Uttarakhand Assembly, the proportion of MLAs who are 55 years of age or below declined to 51 per cent in 2022 from 61 per cent in 2017. In Manipur too, the proportion of MLAs who are 55 years of age or below declined to 55 per cent in 2022 from 71.7 per cent in 2017.

Number of MLAs with bachelor’s degree increased in UP

The number of MLAs in Uttar Pradesh with at least a bachelor’s degree has increased from 72.7 per cent in 2017 to 75.9 per cent in 2022. The number of MLAs in Uttarakhand with at least a bachelor’s degree has come down from 77 per cent in 2017 to 68 per cent in 2022. In Manipur, 76.6 per cent of newly elected MLAs to the 2022 assembly are at least graduates, up from 68.4 per cent in 2017. 9 political parties are represented in the 403-member house in Uttar Pradesh, while three political parties are represented in the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly. Manipur has six political parties represented in the 60-member house along with three independent legislators.
