Following the Congress’ defeat in the Punjab Assembly polls, former state Congress chief Sunil Jakhar on Monday hit out at Charanjit Singh Channi and called him a “burden” whose “greed brought the party down”. Without naming the party’s senior leader Ambika Soni also targeted. Congress leader Jakhar was referring to reports that it was discussed during the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting in New Delhi on Sunday to discuss the defeat of the Congress in the Punjab elections. How the leadership failed to support the outgoing Chief Minister Channi, who was “promoted by the party’s central leadership as an important figure”.
In a tweet, Jakhar said, “An important person – are (you) kidding? Thank God he was not declared a ‘national treasure’ in the CWC by the woman who had proposed him as the first person for the chief minister’s post. For them he may be an important person but for the party he has been only a burden. Jakhar said, “It was not the top functionaries, but their own greed that brought them and the party down.”
Jakhar also referred to the Enforcement Directorate raids against Channi’s close relatives in a money laundering case related to illegal mining in the state, as he tweeted a picture of Channi with the headline – “ED collects Rs 10 cr from Channi’s relative Confiscated, the Chief Minister spoke of conspiracy.” The Aam Aadmi Party has won 92 seats in the 117-member Punjab Assembly. The Congress was defeated in the elections and could win only 18 seats.
