Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav on Wednesday categorically said that there is no question of privatization of railways and all that has been said about it is ‘imaginary’. The recruitment process is going on for 1.14 lakh vacancies.” Responding to “Discussion on Demands for Grants under the control of Ministry of Railways for the year 2022-23”, the Railway Minister said that the railways cannot be privatized as the tracks belong to the Railways. The locomotives belong to the railways, the stations and the power lines belong to the railways. Apart from this, the coaches and the signal system are also of the Railways.
Ashwini Vaishnav said that his predecessor Piyush Goyal has also clarified earlier that the railway structure is complex and it will not be privatized. He also clarified that even goods trains are not being privatized. The Railway Minister said, “Railways as a ‘strategic sector’ in the eyes of the government has social responsibility. After the minister’s reply, the House approved the ‘Demands for Grants for the year 2022-23 under the control of the Ministry of Railways’.

After this powers were given to the officers at the level of the ground offices. Today most of the tenders are decided by the field officers, they do not come to the Railway Board. There has been a huge change. The MP himself says that this change is visible.” Regarding the railway projects in West Bengal, the Railway Minister said that 18 railway projects are pending in West Bengal due to lack of cooperation of the state government. The Railway Minister mentioned several steps taken by the government to bring the railways back on track.
He said that the average annual capital investment was a major problem before the Railways and it has increased from Rs 45,980 crore in 2009-14 to Rs 99,511 crore in the year 2014-19. The Railway Minister said that a record allocation of Rs 2.45 lakh crore has been made during the year 2022-23. He mentioned the works of railway electrification, doubling, gauge conversion and other modernization works. Vaishnav said that assured railway safety is our resolve and we are working in this direction.
