As the war between Russia and Ukraine continues, India’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations R Ravindra said on Monday that India has been calling for an immediate end to the enmity between Russia and Ukraine. During the UNSC briefing, Ravindra said that our Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) has repeatedly called for immediate ceasefire. He has always insisted that there is no other way but dialogue and diplomacy. Ravindra said that the death toll is increasing continuously and the humanitarian situation has become critical.
Highlighting the evacuation of Indians from Ukraine, Ravindra said that India took intensive and immediate steps to evacuate its citizens. So far, about 22,500 Indians have returned home safely. “We are grateful to all our colleagues for their support in our evacuation efforts,” he said. We call for direct contact and dialogue to stop hostilities.
India in touch with Russia and Ukraine
Ravindra also said that India is in touch with both the Russian Federation and Ukraine in this regard and will continue to do so. “We continue to underline the need to respect the United Nations Charter, international law and the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states,” he said. He also appreciated the role played by the Organization for Security and Cooperation (OSCE) in Europe.
deteriorating security situation
He said the recent developments in Ukraine and the resulting deterioration in the security situation have halted the functioning of the Special Monitoring Mission. He said that India supports the continued efforts of the OSCE Minsk Group for a peaceful resolution of the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan. He further said that India believes that any permanent solution to the conflict, can be achieved peacefully only through diplomatic dialogue. We call on both countries to implement the agreement.
Also reiterated the contribution of OSCE
“Keeping in mind the contribution of OSCE to global counter-terrorism efforts, we would like to take this opportunity to reiterate the importance of this issue,” he added. “OSCE was one of the first regional organizations to strongly condemn the terrorist attack on the Indian Parliament in 2001. OSCE should take into account such cross-border terrorist acts and other new and emerging threats.
