Out of 690 assembly seats in five states, the decision of defeat and victory in about five dozen seats was taken by a margin of just 1000 votes. In 21 of these seats, BJP candidates won in this contest of thorns. After counting five states, the BJP returned to power in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur.
There were 15 such seats in Uttar Pradesh, where a difference of less than a thousand votes decided victory and defeat. The victory and defeat of 22 candidates in Manipur was decided by a margin of thousand votes. At the same time, there were 10 such candidates in Goa, who won by a margin of one thousand votes. In Uttarakhand, the election fate of five candidates was decided by a margin of thousand votes, while in Punjab only two seats remained such, where the victory was decided by a margin of thousand votes.
This seat was decided by 50 votes
The toughest contest was in Manipur’s Wabgai seat, where the difference between victory and defeat was just 50 votes. In this seat, Usham Deben Singh of BJP defeated Fazur Rahim of Congress by just 50 votes. In about a dozen seats in Uttar Pradesh, the BJP and the Samajwadi Party (SP)-led alliances were fiercely contested and victory and defeat were decided by a margin of less than 500 votes.
The analysis of the election results shows that the difference between victory and defeat in 11 seats was 500 votes, while there were one and a half dozen seats where the victory and defeat was decided by a difference of close to one thousand votes. The candidates of the BJP alliance defeated the candidates of the SP alliance in seven seats by a margin of less than 500 votes. On the other hand, the candidates of the SP alliance similarly defeated the candidates of the BJP alliance in four seats.
In the 2017 assembly elections, the difference between victory and defeat in eight seats was less than one thousand votes. Of these, five seats were won by BJP candidates, while two seats were won by the Bahujan Samaj Party and one by the SP candidate. In the last election, the toughest contest was in Dumariaganj seat. Here Raghavendra Pratap Singh of BJP defeated Syeda Khatoon of SP by 171 votes.
Tight competition on the seats of Bijnor-Barabanki
In this election, the toughest contest was held in three assembly seats in Bijnor district and two in Barabanki. There was a fierce fight in the Dhampur assembly seat of Bijnor district. In a very close contest here, BJP’s Ashok Kumar Rana defeated SP’s Naeem-ul-Hasan by just 203 votes.
Bijnor’s Chandpur seat also saw a tremendous contest, but the victory went to Swami Omvesh of SP. He defeated Kamlesh Saini of BJP by 234 votes. Nahtaur seat of the same district saw an interesting contest and after several rounds of uproar, finally Omkumar of BJP defeated Munshi Ram of RLD by 258 votes.
There was fierce competition in the Kursi assembly seat of Barabanki district as well. BJP’s Sankendra Pratap defeated SP’s Rakesh Kumar Verma by 217 votes here. In Ramnagar seat of Barabanki district, SP’s Farid Kidwai defeated BJP’s Shadkumar Awasthi by 261 votes.
BJP candidate won by 269 votes
There was also a tussle in the Isauli assembly seat of Sultanpur district. From here Tahir Khan of SP defeated Om Prakash Pandey of BJP by 269 votes. An interesting contest was also seen in the Bilaspur assembly seat of Rampur district. Baldev Singh Aulakh of BJP got the victory after the neck-to-neck contest here. He defeated Amarjeet Singh of SP by 307 votes.
The contest in Baraut seat of Baghpat district was also tough and the victory went to BJP’s Krishnapal Malik. He defeated RLD’s candidate Jaiveer by 315 votes.
In the Nakud assembly of Saharanpur district, there was a fierce fight between the BJP and the SP. From here Mukesh Chaudhary of BJP defeated Dharam Singh Saini of SP by 315 votes. Saini was a minister in Chief Minister Yogi’s government and joined the Samajwadi Party, leaving the BJP just before the elections.
There was also a neck-and-neck fight in the Katra assembly seat of Gonda district. Here Veer Vikram Singh of BJP defeated Rajesh Yadav of SP by 357 votes while Pradeep Kumar Yadav of SP defeated Lakhan Singh Rajput of BJP by 473 votes in Dibiyapur seat of Auraiya district.
In Shahganj seat of Jaunpur district, Ramesh Nirbal of Nishad Party defeated Shailendra Yadav Lalai, MLA and strongman of SP by 719 votes, while Syeda Khatoon of SP won from Dumariaganj seat of Siddharthnagar district. He defeated Raghavendra Pratap Singh of BJP by 771 votes in a fork contest.
BJP’s Ritesh Kumar Gupta defeated SP’s Yusuf Ansari by 782 votes from Moradabad Nagar seat in Moradabad district, while the victory went to SP’s Sachin Yadav in a fierce contest in Jasrana seat of Firozabad district. He defeated Manvendra Singh of BJP by 836 votes.
Close to 10 seats in Goa
There was a close contest in 10 of the 40-member Goa assembly seats. Out of these, BJP won six and the remaining were won by opposition parties.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant himself managed to win from Sanquelim by a margin of just 666 votes. After being backward for several rounds, he finally defeated Dharmesh Sagalani of Congress.
Similarly, Chandrakant Shetye, an independent candidate from Bicholim in Goa, defeated Naresh Saval of Maharashtra Gomantak Party (MGP) by 318 votes. BJP’s Nilesh Cabral defeated INC candidate Amit Patkar by 672 votes from Karchorem.
In Mendrim, MGP’s Jeet Vinayak Barolkar defeated BJP’s Dayanand Sopte by 715 votes, while BJP’s Ulhas Tuenkar defeated Trinamool Congress candidate Valanka Natasha Alemao by 430 votes from Navelim.
In Panaji, BJP’s Atanasio Monserrate defeated Independent candidate and former Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar’s son Utpal Parrikar by 716 votes. Ravi Naik of BJP defeated Ketan Prabhu Bhatikar of MGP by just 77 votes from Ponda Assembly. From Priol, Govind Shepu Gowde of BJP defeated Dik Dhavalikar of MGP by 213 votes.
From St. Andre, Viresh Mukesh Borkar of Revolutionary Goa Party defeated Francisco Silveira of BJP by 76 votes. Aam Aadmi Party candidate Cruz Silva defeated INC’s D’Silva Savio by 169 votes from Velim.
There was a close fight on two seats in Punjab
There were only two seats in Punjab where the margin of victory and defeat was less than 500 votes. Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa of Congress defeated Ravikaran Singh Kahlon of Shiramani Akali Dal by 466 votes from Dera Baba Nanak. Raman Arora of Aam Aadmi Party defeated Rajinder Berry of Congress by 247 votes from Jalandhar Central.
The victory and defeat in 22 seats of Manipur were decided by a margin of one thousand votes. MM Khaute of Janata Dal United (JDU) defeated V Hangkhanliyan of BJP by 624 votes from Churachandpur. Thokchom Radheshyam Singh of BJP defeated M Okendro of Congress by 403 votes from Heirok.
In Jiribam, JDU’s Mohd Achabuddin defeated BJP’s N Buddhachandra Singh by a margin of 416 votes. Independent candidate from Keesamthong, Sapam Nishikant Singh defeated Maheshwar Thonawajam of Republican Party by a margin of 187 votes.
National People’s Party’s Sheikh Noorul Hasan defeated BJP’s N Inderjit Singh by 742 votes from Khetrigaon, while Congress’s Thokchom Lokeshwar Singh defeated BJP’s T Mohindro Singh by 215 votes from Khundrakpam. BJP’s Sapam Ranjan Singh defeated NPP’s Sharat Singh by 394 votes from Konthojam.
JD(U) candidate Mohd Abdul Naseer defeated BJP’s Y Antas Khan by 570 votes from Lilong seat. Naga People’s Front candidate Lashio Keishing defeated BJP’s AS Hoppingson by 779 votes from Fungyar. In Thanlon, BJP’s Vungjagin Walte defeated National People’s Party candidate Khanthang Tonsing by 751 votes. Ram Mooiwah of Naga People’s Party defeated Alfred Kangam S Arthur of INC by 942 votes from Ukhrul.
BJP’s K Raghumani Singh defeated National People’s Party’s Y Joykumar Singh by 909 votes in Uripok. From Wabgai, Usham Deben Singh of BJP defeated Fazur Rahim of INC by just 50 votes. Thokchom Satyavrat Singh of BJP defeated National People’s Party candidate Huidrom Vikramjit Singh by 632 votes from Yeskul assembly seat.
The margin of victory in five seats of Uttarakhand is less than 1000
There was fierce competition in five seats of Uttarakhand and the margin of defeat and victory was less than 1000 votes. The toughest contest in Uttarakhand was in Mangalore seat where Bahujan Samaj Party candidate Sarwat Karim Ansari defeated his nearest rival and Congress candidate Qazi Mohammad Nizamuddin by 661 votes.
