The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday gave a big decision regarding the hijab. The High Court held that accounting is not an essential religious practice of Islam and dismissed the petitions seeking permission to wear the hijab in classrooms. After this decision came, Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said that this decision should be welcomed. Controversy has been going on for the past several months regarding wearing hijab in educational institutions. In the recently concluded assembly elections of five states, some parties had also made it an issue.
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said, “The Karnataka High Court has given a decision, I think that decision should be welcomed. The High Court has said that our daughters should be of any religion, no restriction is allowed on them. School- If the college has a dress code, then people of all religions should follow it.” On one hand BJP leaders are praising this decision, on the other hand some leaders including Asaduddin Owaisi, Mehbooba Mufti, Omar Abdullah have expressed their disappointment over this decision of the court.
The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday said that wearing hijab is not a part of the essential religious practice in Islam and rejected the submissions of Muslim girl students for allowing them to wear hijab in classes. The court also upheld the ban on hijab in educational institutions in the state. A three-judge bench said that the school uniform rule is a reasonable restriction and is constitutionally permissible, on which the girl students cannot raise any objection. Requesting everyone to follow the order, the Karnataka government said that education is necessary.
It is worth noting that on January 1, six girl students of a college in Udupi had attended a press conference organized by ‘Campus Front of India’ and expressed their anger against the college administration for being prevented from entering the classroom wearing hijab. After this, the issue was heated in the whole country including Karnataka and the matter reached the High Court.
